Learning Support Unit Copley High School is an acknowledged centre of good practice in the field of Special Educational Needs in Mainstream Schools. The school's Head of Learning Support, Mr Andrews, and the Governors with responsibility for Special Educational Needs have ensured that the school complies fully with the Code of Practice for pupils with Special Educational Needs. Mr Andrews and his team are based in the spacious and well-equipped Learning Support Unit. The school governors have developed and approved a policy for Special Educational Needs and this is reviewed annually. A report on the policy in practice is published in the Annual Governors' Report to Parents. A copy of the policy is available on request and Learning Support Staff are always pleased to meet and discuss the needs of students with their parent. Copley High School prides itself on being a true comprehensive school and as such admits pupils of all abilities. The LSU enables the school to respond imaginatively to the needs of individual pupils at any stage of their school career. In most cases, the special needs of pupils are met within the mainstream classroom with additional withdrawal for intensive small group tuition as appropriate. A wide range of learning materials is available including extensive computer support. Mr Andrews leads a team made up of Special Educational Needs teachers, teaching assistants and learning mentors based at Copley and staff from specialist services provided by a the local education authority. The LSU also allows for the withdrawal of pupils from lessons if that is in the best interests of other pupils. |
