Homework

The consistent setting of homework is a noted strength of the school. Homework plays a vital part in learning. It encourages pupils to work independently and to become more self-reliant. It adds to the learning experience and encourages all pupils to take some responsibility for their own progress. Increasingly, GCSE courses rely to a great extent on pupils' ability to work independently. Consequently we see homework as a priority from the first day of the first year at secondary school. The Learning Resource Centre is available at the end of the school day for pupils to use for homework and research. Homework Clubs are also run by Learning Support staff on some lunchtimes.

Homework will take a variety of forms. Written homework may be set  to check whether material taught in a lesson has been understood. Alternatively it may be to encourage pupils to take ideas further. Pupils may also be asked to learn work at home or to complete a piece of research requiring information to be gathered outside the classroom.

The time required to complete homework will vary from subject to subject and from year to year. In the early stages we would not expect the work from an individual subject to take more than twenty to thirty minutes. the time required will increase for older pupils. GCSE coursework often requires a piece of work to be planned and completed over a long period of time.

At the start of each year, a copy of the homework timetable is issued to each pupil. Each piece of homework given should be entered by the pupil into the pupil diary which is checked and signed regularly by staff. Parents are also asked to sign the diary regularly and to let us know if any difficulties are experienced in completing work set.

To help pupils to complete  homework as effectively as possible, all the skills involved, including the organisation of time, are dealt with in Life Studies lessons. Failure to complete homework may lead to a detention.
