Extra Activities

A significant part of each pupil's school life is spent outside timetables lessons. It is important that this time is happy, productive and adds to the experience of education. We are concerned to ensure the comfort and safety of pupils. They may enter the school at 8.15am to prepare for the start of the school day at 8.40am. At break pupils may use the playground or remain inside the school Main Hall. A wide variety of refreshments are available during these times.

We have developed the lunchtime period as a very positive period of the school day. All pupils who have lunch on the school premises are able to join the 'Copley Club'. this has been developed in cooperation with Copley Recreation Centre. Pupils pay a small fee for impressive membership cards. Each year group has a different coloured card with a photograph for identificaton. Pupils can use their classrooms to work and talk to friends. There are activities available for pupils to choose. The Learning Resource Centre has extended the facilities available to pupils at lunchtime.

Each pupil is given a personal timetable of the activities offered. The wide range of sporting activities is described in the Sports webpage. Extra clubs include ICT Club, Film and Video Club, Games Club, Dance and Choreography Club, Drama Club, Keyboard Club, Science Club, Fantasy Games Club and Homework Club.

Other activities include Choir and Orchestra, Brass ensemble, Trampolining, Table Tennis, fitness Training and theatre visits. This year two Swimming Galas have been arranged. The Computer Rooms are open for pupils at lunchtime and after school. Older pupils help with supervision. The paired reading club, where older pupils support younger readers, is very popular. There are also regular Science Club visits to venues such as the Museum of Science and Industry and other scientific events and lectures.

We encourage older pupils to join in and lead activities for the younger ones. Pupils are also encouraged to put forward their own ideas for clubs and activities. Three ten week coaching sessions run on Thursday afternoons in Basketball, Trampolining, Table Tennis, Netball and Girls Football.

The LRC is open after school for homework research. School Choir and Orchestra practices take place at lunchtime. Dance sessions are very well attended at lunchtime and after school. Our School Drama Production is an annual event. Weekly rehearsals are held for the cast of the production.

Last year school holidays were organised to Paris and Germany.  See our 'Latest News' page for all the news about these trips.

Every pupil can become involved in a music activity, not just the instrumentalists. We have a school orchestra, choir and brass group, plus smaller musical groups either run by staff or by the pupils themselves. Our instrumental teachers are committed to the music activities at Copley, and either run their own club or help others.

We have an extremely popular annual production and regular concerts, both at school and in the community, to give a platform for our young performers.
