Curriculum

We plan our curriculum to include everything that your child will study or experience in secondary school. At the centre of the curriculum is a timetable of subjects. However, it also includes all the other activities and interests available to your child at school. Our curriculum planning is based on a series of shared beliefs about knowledge, children and learning.

Pupils should be enabled and encouraged to experience their education as a positive and enjoyable process. the school's first aim is that everyone has the right to be happy.

All pupils have the capacity to learn and to continue their development when challenged by appropriate educational provision.

Every pupil should have equal opportunity to develop and to maximise her/his talent, regardless of learning need, disability, gender, creed, ethnic or social background.

We assume high expectations for all. the curriculum will be capable of adaptation to meet the needs of each pupil.

We believe that pupils should develop as autonomous learners but with the ability to learn in co-operation with others. The aims of the school and moral education are at the heart of our work as educators.

The curriculum timetable is organised on a basis of a twenty five period week. Each lesson lasts one hour. Each pupil is therefore taught twenty five hours per week.

At Key Stage Three, pupils follow courses in English, Maths, Information Technology (ICT), Science, Design & Technology, French and German, Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education, History, Geography and Religious Studies. A course of Life Studies comprises all aspects of Copley's provision to promote the pupil's personal and social development. Topics include study skills, careers guidance, relationships (including sex education), health education and citizenship.

We constantly review our curriculum to ensure that it provides the best opportunities for all pupils. Religious Education of a non-denominational character is provided for pupils over the full five year period, forming part of the compulsory core of subjects.

Links for more information on Key Stage Four and links to Curriculum subject areas can be found at the end of this page.

At Copley, we want to ensure that all our pupils experience a curriculum which is appropriate to their abilities, talents and personal qualities. With this in mind, we identify a group of pupils in school whom we would describe as gifted and talented in some or all areas of the curriculum. The main purpose of this identification is to improve classroom provision for them and to ensure that we meet their needs and help them achieve their potential. We also aim to offer activities outside the classroom which extend and challenge gifted pupils.

Any parent who wish to find out more about the curriculum and its organisation are encouraged to contact the Head Teacher, Mr Joyce or Mr Jennings, the Deputy Head at the school.
