Stalybridge Town Crest - The Motto means 'Nothing without Labour'

Attendance and Punctuality

Attendance at school is the foundation for learning. Our systems for monitoring attendance are thorough and clear. Attendance records are computerised. All staff have a full understanding of the value of good attendance and share the responsibility for achieving it. Our detailed policies on attendance are available to interested parents on request.

Punctuality for school and lessons is essential. Tutors and subject teachers are responsible for monitoring punctuality. Serious problems are dealt with by senior staff who involve parents in securing improvements.

At Copley we implement the School Attendance Regulations as rigorously as possible. Throughout the year any absence not fully covered by a written explanation is counted as an unauthorised absence. We do this even when we are reasonable sure that absence was genuine. We believe that this encourages teachers, parents and pupils to have the same expectations about school attendance.

We encourage parents to telephone the school when a child is absent. However, it is essential that a written explanation is sent with the child on the day of return. If a child is absent for three days without explanation or no note is received by the second day after return to school, we immediately contact parents.

Pupils who have attendance problems appear with their parents before a panel of Governors. This Attendance Panel tries to help the parents fulfil their responsibility to their son or daughter attends school. However, if help and advice fail, the Panel has the power to initiate a prosecution in the Magistrates' Court. It does not hesitate to take such action where appropriate.
